Well I had ta take this job cause it was the only one I found, well
It was takin' them dead bodies and puttin' em in the ground
Could'a cared less for heaven or hell they were bound, but...
Wasn't makin' much money, we had to find a way
To increase our daily income, thought maybe the dead could pay
So we'd sell them bodies an' they'd come take 'em away.
Was a bit weird particularly at night, bodies disappearin' was quite a site.
Good thing was they couldn't put up a fight,
Didn't think it was wrong, but knew it wasn't right.
There was just things that we didn't wanna do
But ta try to earn a livin' we just had ta see it through
Always kept that secret, yeah, just between us two, but...
Life was on the side 'a wrong, things you just couldn't tell
Like all that stinkin' money, from cadavers we would sell
It's kinda like ridin' the escalator all the way to hell.
Times were hard, business was slow, but the dead had nowhere to go
We buried the bodies deep in the ground
But if they're dug up, none would be found.
Things were goin' good we were havin' quite a time
But I was countin' all that money yeah, and wishin' it were mine
And lookin' across that table I was seein' my next crime.
So, as I sat there schemin' I must a' looked a little pale
When I heard my wife's voice, what she said I couldn't tell
An' after diggin' that fresh grave I had ta sit a spell.
Now business is good, the money's all mine
The bodies keep comin', there's always a line
As for the job I feel quite fine
But about the wife... well I miss her sometime.

Heartastake

Been around since history began and no one know his name,
Ain't takin' no handouts, he's just gonna stake his claim.
Always on his own terms but teeterin' on the edge just the same,
When he's through the trace is gone and no one's left to blame.
Leavin' the scene, the call came in, so with no rest he began again,
Fired up the car and he hit the road, his mind was achin' was about to explode.
Another one of them down by Priest Lake, lyin' on the seat was his hammer and stake.
Been goin' after these kind ever since the beginning of time,
Used to bother him some, but now he pay it no mind.
These here are the worst so it just don't seem a crime,
Ain't killin' them human types, he just won't cross that line.
Close to the lake as the sun went down, pullin' off the road, passin' through some town,
Noticed things looked a little outta place, saw someone lyin', blood all over their face
Stoppin' at some local store, seven dead people just a lyin' on the floor.
Well, there's just a way to do things no matter what it takes,
Ain't givin' 'em no quarter, and ain't gonna give him a break.
Has been trained for this so he ain't gonna make no mistake,
Only one way to kill him right and that's by poundin' a stake.
Leavin' the town, he was shakin' mad, got to a lake, took all he had,
Got outta the car, started prowlin' around
Knew what he had to do when this one was found.
Drove that stake just as deep as can be, sayin', "You're goin' to hell by the hand of me."
Well, sure there's gonna be another one, just don't know where or when,
Come hell or high water, he'll go and kill him again.
But for now it's a little cruise and flyin' with them voodoo kin,
Cause the offer has been made, if you're close by do drop in.
So well then, as he leaves all you could see are red tail lights goin' into history,
Road disappears, don't know where it'll lead.
But if a man be judged by his deeds, he ain't one, cause he's got his own plan,
Everybody knows he's a spirit killin' man.

Cool As Can Be

Bet all he had on a hand of blackjack, lost one minute, then won it back
And then gave it away, yeah the very next day.
Off to Vegas, was just a prank, the better it became, the more that he drank
Which was every night, yeah on through to daylight.
Started to work, was on the strip, runnin' wild like some kinda trip,
He was feelin' strong, yeah until he went wrong.
Got pretty good at shufflin' the deck, until he started cheatin, figured "What the heck."
Then it all started bustin' loose, ain't his fault, blame it on the juice.
And then he got his chance, a game came along, for those in the know.
Got an invitation... just had to go.
Took all he had just to get the dough.
Was gettin' really nervous, but it didn't show.
Sittin' at the table, big folk around, his hands were good, he was layin' 'em down
He was playin' smart, yeah and actin' a part.
Gettin' ready to pull his shark, got spooked by a sly remark,
So he decided to wait, but it was gettin' late.
Hours draggin' on, he was wantin' to leave,
When he looked at a player, saw a card up his sleeve,
So he decided to speak, but his voice went weak.
Another player saw what was comin' down, pulled out a gun and started pointin' it around,
Everybody ducked to the floor, ran outta bullets, couldn't find no more.
And then somebody yelled, "It's gotta stop!"
So they all stood up. For no reason at all, then they all sat down,
Picked up their cards, and then looked around.
And then placed their bets, yeah without a sound.
Just as cool as can be, but....
The game went on with one less hand, the cheater looked sad, he just lost a grand
And probably more, if you're keepin' score.
Winner pulled the pot and the silence began, looked at the cheater and the card in his hand,
It wasn't lookin' good, it was well understood.
Cheater sat there, didn't put on his hat, without a word, was killed where he sat,
Yeah he can't quit this game, life won't be the same.
On back home, put on the TV, watched the news just to check and see.
Looked just like any other Friday night, horns were blowin' cops were flashin' their lights.
It's always this way, what can you say.
Every single night, every single day,
It's just a game, goes on and on,
We all the same, the same old day,
Just a different name.
We're all as cool as can be.

Downspout

If it were Sunday you knew where to find her, ain't at church, but down at the track.
Never did pick a winner, but the though of winnin' brought her back.
Workin' all the angles she could find, takin' or stealin' from anyone.
Some of the times with her feminine wiles, yeah, but most of the time, with her gun.
Then this chance came along, lookin' like a big score.
Goin' to be a bit risky, worth a million, maybe more.
There's just a small crew, split between only four.
The part was simple, just cause a fuss, a slight distraction for the security man.
Then the crew comes 'a flyin' in, from the back of the getaway van.
Pick up them satchels and then go, at least that was part of the plan.
But the driver must have got spooked, 'cause he split with the rig and ran.
Leaving her standing there, now there ain't no doubt.
Ain't giving up or a' gettin' caught when she hears the cops shout.
So she starts 'a firin' while lookin' for her way out.
Up to the top for awhile shootin' away, flew across an alley to another rooftop.
Down the fire escape, continued to run, been three days before she could stop.
Layin' low in some backwater town, all she thought about was finding that guy.
Maybe killin' him really dead, like the old days, an eye for an eye.
While she's waitin' there, startin' to reminisce.
Always just so close, then it turns out like this.
Just about to win big, something goes amiss.
It was time for her to leave, steals a car and goes back to town.
Only one thing for her to do is to find that guy and gun him down.
Finds her partner at a local bar, sittin' there just steaming mad.
Told that partner her idea, says it's the best one she's ever had.
Then just as usual, the whole thing went wrong.
They went to his place, and the guy was long gone.
The cops were waitin' there, the situation had begun.
Everyone was shootin' yeah, ain't nowhere to run.
When you're a criminal, you die with with your gun.

Alien Hairdo

At the wheel a' Betty, comin' on to just around midnight,
I was travelin' down the backroads when I was blinded by a bright light.
I came to a slide bleedin' stop and saw the strangest sight.
There in the middle of the road was some kind of weird hoodoo.
Standing' there surrounded by a blue glow was some kinda' alien hairdo.
And in a strange voice said, "Slick, we've been wanta' to talk to you."
I just stood there thinkin' escapin' might be a bit risky,
When outta nowhere came this tray of alien whisky.
We drank some whisky... a lotta whisky...
I was drunk.
Well, as my momma done taught me
Never to be rude with a guest.
So I took me a shot,
Man, it was some of the best.
And just for my nerves,
I took and shot down the rest.
When this alien says, "Well, 'ol Slick you're the best.
And if that be the case, then we got a request."
So the alien told me the plan, and where I had to go.
Was off to a shy town just a little south of Kokomo.
There was hidden hideout where I would drop off my cargo.
I got there like lightnin' as the sun took and broke apart the day.
And if you was to ask me this is what I think I'd have to say...
This truck drivin' man's life has always been on the edge of strange.
Since I met that alien hairdo ain't a' never goin' to be the same.
